When those chilly fall days roll in and the leaves start falling, there’s no better way to spend your time than visiting Vienna’s world-class museums.
Inspiring and full of beautiful artwork, they’re the perfect place to be when the weather isn’t so great. Vienna is a living, breathing history book with roots that reach all the way back to 500 BC, and its museums are the pages that tell its story.
It can be quite difficult to know where to start, since there are more than 100 museums scattered across the city. You can find grand imperial collections and masterpieces of Austrian art, to quirky little museums; there’s something for every kind of curious mind. So, preferences and tastes may differ on which ones deserve the top spot, but one of our favorites and an absolute must-visit is the Leopold Museum, located in the MuseumsQuartier, and the Kunsthistorisches Museum.
If you like art with a little edge, the Leopold Museum should be your pick, too. It is home to one of the world’s largest collections of Austrian modern art; it brings together works by Egon Schiele, Gustav Klimt, and other major names from Vienna’s turn-of-the-century art scene.
But the museum is more than just famous paintings. Its bright, contemporary architecture and great mix of exhibitions make it a place you can easily spend a few hours exploring.
And once you’ve had your art fix, there’s no need to rush off. Spend some time in one of the restaurants or cafés in the MQ courtyard, or head up to Zur Libelle, the rooftop terrace, for a drink with a view.

Its impressive collection includes masterpieces by Rubens, Rembrandt, Velázquez, Titian, Vermeer, and Pieter Bruegel, to name a few, alongside Greek and Roman antiquities, an Egyptian exhibition, and one of the world’s five largest coin collections. In the Kunstkammer you can find one of the most important collections of goldsmith work, sculptures, whimsical ivory carvings, and many other treasures. Basically, there’s a lot to discover under one very grand roof.
If you need a little fuel to keep exploring, head to the café-restaurant in the Cupola Hall on the first floor. Because even art lovers need a coffee and cake break.
After a day of art, culture and exploring, you might be ready to put your feet up. And guess what? You don’t even have to leave Vienna to enjoy a little holiday feeling.
