Best events and things to do for New Year's in Vienna

You don't realize how time flies until it's New Year's Eve again, a day which is all about music, food, spending time with the ones you love and welcoming the New Year. In a big, vivid city like Vienna, you get many different opportunities to celebrate New Year's. To make your choice easier, we have selected some of the best ways to spend New Year's in Vienna.

Silvesterpfad | Vienna's New Year's Eve trail
Vienna is a very cultural city and full of traditions. The most popular and most traditional way to celebrate New Year's the "Silvesterpfad", which takes place pretty much in the entire city center of Vienna. To be more precise, the Silvesterpfad ranges from the town hall (Wiener Rathaus) through downtown, passing St. Stephan's Cathedral (Stephansdom) until the Wiener Prater (Riesenradplatz). In front of Vienna's town hall and at the Wiener Prater the New Year's party starts at 2pm and runs until the morning hours. On 13 different stages along the "Silvesterpfad", there will be live acts and live music of every genre. At "Graben", at the back Vienna Hofburg, you will be able to listen to classical Viennese Waltz music and can even l participate in dance lessons. At midnight you will enjoy a great and flamboyant firework. And don't worry, you don't have to starve during those vibrant 12 hours: Vienna's best culinary restaurants will offer you plenty of Viennese dishes, like the "Kaiserschmarrn", baked potatoes, etc. and, of course, hot punch. As Vienna is known for its classical music and many beautiful ball nights, there is, of course, a prom at New Year's Eve. The "Silvesterball" (New Year's Eve Prom) takes place at Vienna's famous Hofburg and is full of joy, classical music and traditions: After Mmdnight you can dance to Johann Strauss' Blue Danube Waltz. This year's slogan is "The Perfect Moment in Time". One of the most glamorous ways to celebrate New Year's is the town hall's New Year's Gala. Similar to the New Year's ball, tickets sell quickly. You can check for remaining tickets here. The gala night starts with a 4-course-menu followed by the live performance of the Vienna Court Ball Orchestra. At midnight can enjoy the magnificent firework above Vienna's beautiful rooftops and then dance the whole night away.

In case you didn't get tickets to one of the exclusive Viennese gala balls or didn't want to spend quite as much, a lot of bars and nightclubs are open on New Year's Eve and offer special New Year's parties. The two clubs, "Pratersauna" and "Vie i Pee", situated next to each other, decided to celebrate New Year's Eve together. At U4-Vienna, one of Vienna's oldest and most traditional nightclubs, you will be accompanied by 4 different DJs on 2 dance floors while moving to the best Hip Hop, House and Charts music. New Year's Eve Run
Before starting the party night, you can attend a 5.3 km New Year's Eve run on December 31st. The run goes directly through Vienna's historic district passing sights such as the Hofburg Palace, the Museum of Fine Arts, the Museum of Natural History, the Austrian Parliament, City Hall, the Burgtheater and the University of Vienna. So you can use the run as a sightseeing trip as well. The run starts at 11am at "Kärtnerring 7-9". This is a great way to end the old year full of energy and motivation.
