8 Best Christmas Markets in Vienna You Shouldn't Miss

Best Christmas Markets in Vienna
Visiting Vienna during Christmas time is especially charming! The city's most important squares are transformed into Christmas Markets and the city center's streets are illuminated, most notably with the giant red light bulbs at Rotenturmstrasse near St. Stephen's Cathedral. But what are the most charming Christmas Markets in Vienna? Here are our choices!

1. Wiener Weihnachtstraum am Rathausplatz

Vienna's most popular Christmas Market, the Vienna Christmas Dream / Wiener Weihnachtstraum is always a good choice! The Rathausplatz, between the illuminated city hall and the Burgtheater offer the entire Christmas package - from souvenirs like the original Viennese snow globe (yes the snow globe originated in Vienna!) to a variety of food and dessert stands, hot punch and Gluhwein as well as a giant ice skating rink for the little ones.

Get there early enough to visit the Schoenbrunn castle, one of Vienna's top attractions and enjoy a Gluhwein and the atmosphere at the Schönbrunner Christkindlmarkt.

4. Spittelberg

Vienna's most hidden Christmas Market is especially popular among locals. A few side streets from Vienna's shopping street Mariahliferstrasse at Spittelberg, a few tiny and narrow streets lead you through the Christmas Market with local shops open late, plenty of drinks and souvenirs and the best potato fritter ever! Look out for the hand-made potato fritter - Kartoffelpuffer - or see where locals line up.
