Top10 Vienna Insider Restaurant of the Month April: Ludwig van

In search of a new Vienna insider restaurant, one of our City Scouts suggested Ludwig van. Once a typical Viennese “Beisl” (a typical tiny Austrian restaurant), today one of the best restaurants in Vienna and most certainly an insider tip. In 2016 the new owner Oliver Jauk took over Ludwig van and together with chef Walter Leidenfrost revolutionized the experience of the Austrian kitchen, while maintaining the interior design in the heritage building, where the famous composer Ludwig van Beethoven once used to live.

When entering Ludwig van, you feel like walking into a typical small Viennese restaurant from the 1980ies. After a few moments though, you realize there is no Wiener Schnitzel on the menu, but instead extravagant modern combinations inspired by the traditional Austrian cuisine. Ludwig van interprets the Austrian cuisine in its very own way. Chef Walter Leidenfrost, who has been awarded several culinary awards in the past years, creates a superior gourmet dining experience and contributes to making Ludwig van one of the best insider restaurants in Vienna. One should definitely try the aged beef (Alte Kuh) with eggplant. Our absolute favorite: Mangalitsa pork with asparagus and hollandaise sauce (made with beer nstead of wine). Both dishes cooked to perfection - but let the pictures speak for itself.

With the choice of a 4-course menu, you get a great idea of Ludwig van's interpretation of 21st century Viennese cuisine. The menu can be accompanied by fine wines & drinks, to perfect the offering. We started off with WALTER's Wermut, an in-house production at its best. The home-made ramson-butter and bread was just the beginning of our culinary journey. Today's appetizer was golden beet with bulgur, orange and ramson – something we honestly would have never asked for, but are very glad to have tried it! Both, appetizer and main course were accompanied by perfectly matching wines. After a 2-hour dining experience, we paused to enjoy an amazing glass of Gin Tonic from a local producer, called Strasser Gut. We concluded our evening with a very interesting combination of rhubarb, chamomile ice cream and rice cake.

The manager himself, as well as all staff, constantly endeavor to treat and serve their guests well and very individually. The combination of revolutionized Austrian cuisine at a gourmet level and the typical “Beisl” interior style, makes Ludwig van our Insider Tip of the Month April! Ludwig van offers creative combinations inspired by the typical Austrian cuisine. The creations of chef Walter Leidenfrost are definitely unique!
